To understand the Middle East/North Africa we have to look back and then to cover the territory of who did what to whom when and to what degree.

Europe in both the Middle East and Africa displayed a cruel superiority of Europe's way
by dividing these areas of sophisticated tribal areas to non-sophisticated tribal lands into arbitrary countries.

As a reflection of Europe this led to continuous war between factions in these artificial states imposed upon the more natural tribal areas.

In the Middle East/North Africa this was imposed upon a more sophisticated tribal areas with rules and ways to clarify issues more through talking things out yet with empires covering various lands at various times.

As with the rest of humanity there were various wars and troubles between the empires and against the invasions of Europe.

The modern age of the Middle East/North Africa really began in the 1920's approximately with the beginning of oil use and the finding of oil in these areas.

Early on the USA made agreeable treaties with the Saudis that have existed without too much change and exist today. The USA also got itself permanently fixed in Bahrain.

It's important to note that in both these countries there have been ongoing demonstrations for years with the Shia population wanting democratic reforms in these Sunni run countries. Our press ignores these demonstrations for the most part.

The UK got into Iran and did so in a very old British way of superiority. They were not liked in Iran for a few reasons:
1. They would not pay the agreed amounts as determined by treaty.
2. They treated Iranian oil workers like slaves.
3. The oil company administration had a very low ceiling of advancement imposed upon any Iranian talent hired.
4. The UK nationalized the Iranian Oil as British Oil

To make a long story short the democratic government that had, before tried to negotiate change, rallied under the new leader and they nationalized the oil as Iranian oil.

The Brits went to the Yankees and the CIA created a coup of the democratic government which ended up with the Shah as puppet dictator and the USA CIA in charge of the country and murdering dissidents.

This was a major starting point for the oil industry really running the show in the Middle East but we cannot forget the 1948 imposment of the State of Israel in the area that has, since, been at war to some degree with its neighbours and peace never given a chance because of the outrageous 'blundering of the USA it 'pretended'search for peace as Israel gradually takes over everywhere Palestinian.

The Third huge problem is the American strategic planning not only in offence to any Soviet now Russia endeavours in the area but to any country not fully in favour of the USA to be ripped apart and sent to ruin.
