My Father Chose the Time and Place of His Death

When my father returned home from a Fox Hunting trip to Ireland in 1965, he told me about a man who had died while Fox Hunting. He insisted that he was going to die that way too. He was, after all, the Master of Hounds at his own Fox Hunt in Minnesota. I was a Whipper-In for him as a teenager.
In 1965 my father, Stuart Wells Jr., had just achieved his lifetime objective, being the first non-Dayton President of a big retail store in Minneapolis called Dayton's (now Target). He predicted the Youth Revolution in Fashion in 1961. He also invented Trend Merchandising, which revolutionized the Fashion Industry.
In 1966, he went through open-heart surgery for the replacement of his aortic valve. In that era, compared to now, both his anesthesia and his heart valve were still somewhat primitive. When my father’s heart was stopped, he had problems with his anesthesia. He had a terrible vision that he was dead in a casket with maggots eating his body.
After the operation and his awful Near-Death-Experience, he built a Meditation Cabin on the river by his second house in Virginia. I did not even know what Meditation was then. In early December of 1967, he asked to meet with me. He said he thought that something was wrong with his new heart valve, but his doctors could find nothing wrong. He told me that his operation was so awful, that even if his valve failed, he would rather die than go through that operation again. I did not know that talk would end up being prophecy!
Two weeks later, just as he and his horse cleared a small rise while Fox Hunting in Virgina, not only did his second house appear on the horizon, but so did the fox that they were chasing. Just then, without a sound, he slowly slid off his horse. By the time he hit the ground, he was dead.
The autopsy revealed that his heart was in perfect condition, no cholesterol or plaque problems. But his new valve was twisting on its axis and thus slowly closing off a major coronary artery. In order to live, he would have needed a second operation, which he told me he would never have. So I believe that his Soul chose the time and place of his death, doing the very thing he loved the most, Fox Hunting. This event was of vital importance to my Spiritual life!
