Obama is Choking on Health Care

By promising that if you liked your health insurance, you could keep it, Obama exposed the naked truth about insurance. If your insurance company doesn't like you, they can kick you to the curb, and there is not much that you can do about it.

If you look closely at any insurance policy, you will find that they can change the fees, the coverage, the terms, and even drop you without any input from the policy holder. It is the definition of a one-sided deal.

The fact that many people in our country, particularly the GOP, want to preserve this excessive and truly brutal system is no surprise. According to Wikipedia, between 1998 and 2010 health-care was number two of thirteen industries in spending for lobbying. This group spent over $4 billion on lobbying efforts, exclusive of political contributions. Banks spent slightly more, and communications and energy lobbies spent less.

Having bought and paid for their position, the health-care lobby was able to force the President to sweep universal coverage "off-the-table" before the run-up to any voting on Obamacare. Even so, the public has become aware of the thumb on the scale. World-wide, the failure of our health-care system is becoming obvious, with or without Obamacare.

Obama's mistake was in promising something on behalf of the industry that was not his to offer. Keeping coverage you like, is only available in countries with a single-payer system. His faltering attempt at reform may have pushed universal coverage further out of reach for Americans, but the need for it is now in the room like a big brown dog.
