US Climate Alliance and the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Covid-19 virus pandemic is showing everyone, worldwide,  how truly incompetent and corrupt  Donald Trump is by his delaying or ignoring vital recommended healthcare practices, eliminating government pandemic expertise, abdicating his administrative responsibilities and reducing federal expenditures dedicated to combating the Covid-19 virus.  Making matters even worse, during the worst global pandemic in recent history, Trump and his Republican followers are unwilling to support millions of uninsured Americans, are continuing to work in the courts to eliminate Obamacare for tens of millions more Americans who are currently insured and recently announced the elimination of support for the World Health Organization (WHO).  Uninsured Americans treated for the Codiv-19 virus can expect medical bills in the $75,000 range [1].  Even the costs for privately insured Americans can range into the tens of thousands.  The Corona Virus Pandemic is making it very clear that when it is over,  the US needs to implement drastic changes in its medical insurance and service systems.

Several groups of US State Governors and the US House of Representatives have realized that our President and his cultish followers continue to make mistake after mistake, which has led to the unnecessary death of countless numbers of Americans.  The Governors continue to try to implement science based solutions that experts say should slow the spreading of the Covid-19 virus, processes that are counter to Trump’s devastating and constantly changing proposed policies that often threaten American lives and financial ruin for millions of Americans, including many who are employed in small for profit and non-profit organizations that Trump’s current policies are not serving very well.  So now, Trump threatens to use questionable legal authorities to prevent the Governors and the House of Representatives from protecting millions of Americans.  His proposals on opening the economy and public schools nationwide have met with strong opposition from the Nation’s top healthcare physicians, scientists and business leaders who claim the likelihood of continued mass spreading of the Covid-19 virus would be inevitable and lead to even more deaths and a further collapse of the US economy.  Yet, some states seem ready to blindly follow Trump's intuition based suggestions rather than those based on science and experience by MDs and Healthcare Scientists.

It has become urgent that we ask the Nation’s Governors to join together during this crisis to utilize their constitutional rights to save the lives of possibly hundreds of thousands of Americans and millions more from the global population. A working model for massive multi-state cooperation is the US Climate Alliance launched by Governor Jerry Brown of California in 2018 to combat climate change and global warming when the Trump administration withdrew the US from the Paris Accord.  Yet another existential threat that Trump and his Republican cult followers continue to ignore and refuse to support renewable energy sourced global warming mitigation.  Yet, Trump and his cult-like Republican Senators thought it was just fine to pass a recent, more than $2T  tax cut for the Nation’s wealthiest corporations and individuals, which will only enhance their wealth and increase global warming. The Trumpers like to blame China and have even referred to climate change as a “Chinese Hoax,” in spite of science based risk assessments that predict hundreds of millions or even billions of people and species will likely perish from global warming caused droughts, food shortages, floods, and massive fire storms with the cost of today's inaction estimated as high as $70T [2].

The US Climate Alliance (USCA) [3] has been joined by 25 states, under an agreement signed by all 25 Governors, to work together to slow the temperature rise of the Earth caused by climate change and global warming. These states serve a population of more than 180 million Americans, have a combined state GSP of more than $11T and are virtually the world’s second largest economy.  The remaining 25 US states & DC should be encouraged to join any USCA’s Codiv-19  mitigation agreements & efforts.

The relevant USCA states’ statistics are contained in the Table below.  We call upon the USCA members to forge a new, additional agreement to combat the further spreading in their states of the Codiv-19 virus by working with scientists in defining the minimum testing and tracking requirements that need to be met before a member state should begin processes of cancelling “shelter in place” and reopening the state’s economy to more than healthcare providers and other vital public service industries.  Every non-USCA state should also be invited to join this effort. In the event the Codiv-19 virus continues to infect millions of Americans because of a premature federal call for the “opening of our national economy,” for political reasons, and if Mr. Trump refuses to cooperate with the USCA by withholding needed federal financial and legislative support for a major US-wide initiative that supports 180M+ Americans, he should be held morally, if not legally responsible, for the illnesses and deaths of the many Americans who might suffer because of his personal disregard for science based recommended mitigation solutions.
