A New Second Amendment

It's time to revoke or rewrite the Second Amendment and I can prove it. Suppose we were to take the Second Amendment seriously. If we are to be defended by a "well-ordered militia" we would first need to abolish our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. That includes the immediate closure of all overseas bases, because none of those existed in 1776. Consequently, we would only defend ourselves if attacked within our borders. Next, all current legal gun owners, in order to keep their weapons, would be pressed into the new (renewed) militia. That is, those that pass the physical and psychological requirements and background checks. Those who pass muster would then need to register their weapons and periodically qualify with them. To be an effective militia, of course, these patriotic gun owners would be required to spend several weeks each year in training. Naturally, an oath of loyalty to the United States (including, by extension, the Commander in Chief) would be a part of their induction into the militia. What? This doesn't sound realistic to you? It doesn't to me either. It would be a disaster on many levels. Which begs the question, why haven't we fixed the Second Amendment long before now? Clearly it describes a world long gone and is inadequate to guide our lives today. Amendments can be added, subtracted, and rewritten. I wish to live in the real world, where our Constitution guides us through the world as it is.
