Keith Olbermann is a talented and vigorous voice for the progressive point of view in America, a counterweight to the brand of breezy vilification that has become the hallmark of people like O’Reilly, Beck, and Palin on the right.

But a counterweight still adds to the heavy load of incivility that is dragging down constructive dialogue in our country. As these commentators rail at the abuses of others, can they really fail to perceive that their nightly rants degrade the very foundation of democracy: the duty to conduct the exercise of freedom with personal respect and public restraint.

Our enduring hope must be that people like this will ultimately exhaust the patience of the American people and that the radicalism of their boisterous partisans will be subdued.
