Eurozone Crisis Live: Violence in Barcelona amid Spanish General Strike - As It Happened

By Graeme Wearden, Guardian UK

29 March 12

Spain's first general strike for 18 months has been well-supported, as citizens protest against the government's labour reforms and austerity plans.

Protests began early, with demonstrators clashing with police in several cities as they tried to disrupt buses and prevent lorries arriving at, or leaving, wholesale markets. Over 50 people were arrested, and a small number treated for injuries.

Unions say they were pleased with the turnout today. Transport links have been badly affected, with hundreds of flights cancelled, and trains and buses delayed.

Violence Flares During Spain General Strike

By Al Jazeera

30 March 12

Spanish workers angry at a labour reform the government calls an "unstoppable" necessity staged a general strike on Thursday, bringing factories and ports to a standstill and igniting flashes of violence on the streets.

Tens of thousands of protesters packed a square in central Madrid to vent their anger at the labour reforms and deep spending cuts, while in Barcelona, police fired rubber bullets to disperse a crowd that had set bins ablaze on the sidelines of a demonstration.

Thursday's strike was called by trade unions protesting against labour reforms and spending cuts which the conservative government says are needed to save the economy, and has resulted in some mild clashes and detentions of at least 58 people so far.

"This is a just response to a brutal reform of our system of labour relations," Ignacio Fernandez Toxo, leader of the CCOO, one of the main trade unions, said. .

Spain's General Strike Shows First Signs of Rebellion Against Austerity

By Giles Tremlett, Guardian UK

29 March 12

With near-empty railway stations, shut factories, mass marches and occasional outbreaks of violence during a general strike on Thursday, Spaniards showed the first signs of rebellion against the reformist, austerity-preaching conservative government they voted in four months ago.

Police and pickets clashed in a handful of places, but it was a largely peaceful general strike in a country whose sinking economy, with 23% unemployment, has become the focus of worry about the future of the whole eurozone area.

Occupy Wall Street Affiliates Chain Subway Gates Open For Fare Strike

By Nick Pinto, The Village Voice

29 March 12

A group calling itself the "Rank and File Initiative" claimed credit yesterday for opening up more than 20 subway stations throughout the city for free entry.

Chaining open emergency gates at stations on the F, L, R, Q, 3, and 6 lines during rush hour yesterday morning, the anonymous activists posted signs designed to resemble MTA service-change announcements that read "Free Entry, No Fare. Please Enter Through The Service Gate."

A press release claiming credit for the action said it was carried out by activists affiliated with Occupy Wall Street, as well as by rank-and-file members of Transit Workers Union Local 100, which is currently in negotiations with the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Finally, OWS Gets Police to Arrest the People in Suits

By Bryan Farrell, Waging Nonviolence

26 March 12

Sometimes justice requires a little imagination. On Saturday, when much of the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York was loudly denouncing police violence against minorities and protesters, a small group of environmentalists dreamed up a way to get the police to focus on the crimes of the 1 percent, to the point of arresting five corporate suits on United Nations property. Granted, those five were actually members of the OWS affinity group Disrupt Dirty Power, which used Saturday’s action (billed as a “mock’upation”) to launch a month of actions targeting the “corrupt partnership between Wall Street, politicians and the business of pollution.” Police officers seemed thrown for a loop as they tore down tents bearing corporate logos and cuffed people who claimed to be from Bank of America and ExxonMobil. Compared to the rowdy anti-NYPD march earlier that afternoon, this time, the cops had more of a chance to think about what side they’re really on.

That event usually consists of a march to Capitol Hill and meetings with congressional representatives, but because of the outcry over student loans and the challenges of student debt, the protest at Sallie Mae was added to the schedule.

What Occupy Wall Street Accomplished in Its First Six Months

By Travis Waldron, ThinkProgress

19 March 12

Since its beginning, Occupy Wall Street and the protests it spawned across the country have faced critics who say it has no goals and wouldn’t achieve any substantial accomplishments. “In fact, the sum total of what Occupy Wall Street has accomplished is zero,” a New York Post columnist wrote in November. “Inspiring chat around the national watercooler is not an achievement.” The movement turned six months old last Saturday, and a closer look at its record of achievement reveals that it has done more than spark conversation around Wall Street’s watercoolers. Occupy groups have shifted the national debate on taxes and inequality, helped homeowners stay in their homes, forced major policy issues to the forefront of debate at the state and federal level, and gotten the attention of the institutions they’ve challenged most forcefully. With that in mind, ThinkProgress compiled a brief list of Occupy Wall Street’s accomplishments over its first six months:

Occupy Wall Street Protesters See Tweets Used Against Them

By CommonDreams Staff

22 March 12

As a result of recent subpoenas issued to Twitter by NY District Attorneys and prosecutors, several Occupy Wall Street protestors have re-evaluated their decision to fight charges against them. The order allows the user’s Twitter account to be used by the court in order to find incriminating evidence against the owner. Prosecutors claim many tweets by protesters exhibit an “intent to break the law,” leading some of the arrested to accept plea agreements.

Police and protesters squared off on the Brooklyn Bridge during a march on Oct. 1, 2011. Manhattan prosecutors have subpoenaed Twitter account in connection to the incident. Martin Stolar, an attorney for one of the OWS arrestees said: "It is an attempt by the DA's office to use a sledgehammer to squash a gnat. It's a little overkill."

Justin Wedes, 25, who works on the OWS social media team, said: "The NYPD and Manhattan DA's office are on a fishing expedition for any incriminating evidence, which they have yet to find. The result is a chilling effect on our free speech rights and the waste of taxpayer money to peruse individual's public and private communications."

Facing Global Protest, G8 Retreats

By OccupyWallSt.org

06 March 12

The Group of 8 Summit, a meeting of the governments of the world's eight largest economies, was supposed to convene in Chicago this May. For months, Occupy Chicago, international anti-war groups, Anonymous, and hundreds of allies have publicly planned to shut it down. Now, only two months before the meeting is scheduled to begin, U.S. President Barack Obama is moving the assembly of over 7,000 leaders from the world’s wealthiest governments to the Camp David presidential compound, located in rural Maryland near Washington, DC, one of the most secure facilities in the world. The Chicago Tribune reports that summit organizers are "stunned" by the news.

Occupiers and allies celebrated the decision with a victory party last night. The Coalition Against NATO/G8 War & Poverty Agenda (CANG8) and Occupy Chicago issued the following statement:

But there's a lot of ferment behind the scenes - at least at Occupy Wall Street.

Check the Occupy Wall Street website and you'll see at least 15 events every day: meetings by working groups on arts and culture, alternative banking, media, security.

It's easy to bemoan our political leaders and we no doubt expect way too much from them. They are, after all, no more than elected public officials. We vote them into office to represent us.

When they fail to represent the will of the people and the nation, we need to replace them and find those that will.

This democratic process is but one of the goals of the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement. OWS can now be found in 951 cities in 83 countries including Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Africa.

Occupy Protest Targets 'Corporate Greed'

Hundreds of Occupy Portland protesters marched through downtown Wednesday afternoon, closing offices of some businesses in a rally against what protesters said was corporate greed. Wednesday's march and protests were part of a national F29 rally called "Shut Down the Corporations Day of Action."

The protests were organized by the Portland Action Lab in coordination with similar marches and rallies in 70 cities across the nation. It was aimed at businesses, lawmakers and groups that work with the American Legislative Exchange Council, a Washington, D.C., organization that promotes free-market, limited government legislation across the nation. Homeland Security Spied On Occupy

By Michael Hastings, Rolling Stone

As Occupy Wall Street spread across the nation last fall, sparking protests in more than 70 cities, the Department of Homeland Security began keeping tabs on the movement. An internal DHS report entitled "SPECIAL COVERAGE: Occupy Wall Street," dated October of last year, opens with the observation that "mass gatherings associated with public protest movements can have disruptive effects on transportation, commercial, and government services, especially when staged in major metropolitan areas." While acknowledging the overwhelmingly peaceful nature of OWS, the report notes darkly that "large scale demonstrations also carry the potential for violence, presenting a significant challenge for law enforcement."

But we are pleasantly surprised to learn that the New York Police Department is expecting us: as evidenced by the department-wide memo they’ve issued (see below), the NYPD’s Counterterrorism Bureau Terrorism Threat Analysis Group (glad to know they’re on top of the important stuff) knows where/when the day’s activities will start, how/when the call went out, why we’re marching and who we’re targeting (B of A, Pfizer and Koch Industries). So that’s where all of our page views are coming from! They even pasted our #F29 poster into the document!

Shut Down The Corporations: Leap Into Action! Reclaim Our Future!

By OccupyWallSt.org

28 February 12

This Wednesday, Occupiers in New York, Oakland, Mexico City, and over 80 other cities will take part in a coordinated National Day of Action to Shut Down the Corporations. Occupations have been preparing a variety of decentralized actions in response to Occupy Portland's call to target the American Legislative Exchange Council:

We specifically call on people to target corporations that are members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). The biggest corporations in America, like ExxonMobil, Bank of America, BP, Monsanto, Pfizer, and Wal-Mart use ALEC to buy off legislators and craft legislation that serves only the interests of corporations and not people. They then duplicate and spread this corporate legislation in Washington DC and in state legislatures across the country. The anti-labor legislation in Wisconsin and the racist bill SB 1070 in Arizona are two recent and destructive examples of what corporations use ALEC to do.

Occupy Wall Street Says It's Not Endorsing Occupy Conference in Philadelphia Over July 4

By Associated Press

24 February 12

Philadelphia - Occupy Wall Street isn't endorsing the Occupy conference being planned in Philadelphia because the idea wasn't approved by its general assembly.

An attorney who advised some Occupy Wall Street protesters arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge last year said this week that his 99% Declaration Working Group is planning a national Occupy conference in Philadelphia over the Fourth of July. The attorney, Michael Pollok, said delegates will be elected from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories. Participants will draft and ratify a "petition for a redress of grievances" and present them to President Barack Obama and Congress, he said.

But Han Shan, a member of the Occupy Wall Street public relations working group, said Thursday that the conference was mainly Pollok's idea and that, while Occupy Wall Street may support some of its ideas, the group isn't endorsing the conference itself.

"We think it's critically important to truly build consensus," Shan said. "This was not something that was built around consensus."

Occupy Protester's Tweets Subpoenaed

An Occupy Wall Street protester and prosecutors are tussling over his tweets, a clash that's raising legal issues of privacy in an age of living online.

The contest has sounded alarms among electronic privacy advocates, who see ominous overreaching in the Manhattan prosecutor's efforts to subpoena tweets sent by a demonstrator facing a disorderly conduct charge. The protester's lawyer is trying to block the subpoena, calling it an infringement on constitutional rights and "an unwarranted invasion of privacy."

But the Manhattan district attorney's office says it's fair game to go after messages that protester Malcolm Harris sent publicly for weeks before and months after his arrest. .

Occupy Colleges and the 2012 Election

By Krystie Yandoli, The Nation

24 February 12

It's clear to anyone who watched the State of the Union address last January that President Obama has begun to echo the Occupy Wall Street movement by voicing an increasingly populist agenda and taking on the inequality gap as a major theme.

"If you're earning a million dollars a year you shouldn't get special tax subsidies or deductions," the President said. "On the other hand, if you make under $250,000 a year, like 98% of American families, your taxes shouldn't go up."

While Obama is now talking about "98% of American families" - coming awfully close to the OWS catchphrase of 99% - to appeal to the majority of voters in November, student occupiers aren't convinced, believing that neither party genuinely represents the desires of occupiers. While the President is now telling the majority of Americans what they want to hear, he is still accepting donations from corrupt banks and Wall Street firms, establishing a Super-Pac despite his earlier reservations and failing to uphold campaign promises benefiting students.

These facts have left Occupy College participants with complex questions about what to do with their votes.

Why the Volcker Rule Is Crucial to the 99%

By Occupy the SEC, Guardian UK

22 February 12

The United States aspires to democracy, but no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. Accordingly, Occupy the SEC is delighted to participate in the public comment process for the implementation of Section 619 of the Dodd-Frank Act by the SEC, Federal Reserve, OCC and FDIC ("the Agencies"). This country's governing principles of transparency and due process mandate that any rules implemented by our regulators comport with the democratically-elected legislature's intention to protect the people from the widespread banking abuses and excesses of the recent past.

We believe the Volcker Rule is important to the future of the banking industry and, if strongly enforced, will help move our financial system in a more fair, transparent, and sustainable direction. Prohibiting banking entities from engaging in proprietary trading and banning their sponsorship of covered funds are key elements to regulating the financial system and giving force to the Dodd-Frank Act.

At its core, the Volcker Rule seeks to make sure that if a banking entity fails, it does not bring down the whole system with it. We appreciate the momentous challenges that the agencies continue to face in effectively implementing the rule, and we present these comments to assist them in their task. […]

Occupy Movement Targets ALEC, Corporate-Interest Group With Ties to Legislators

By Adam Gabbatt, Guardian UK

Co-ordinated protests are planned in some 60 cities later this month against a right-wing group which activists say has an unfair hand in writing state legislation that favours corporate interests.

Working under the banner Shut Down the Corporations, activists plan to target corporate members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) with nationwide protests on 29 February.

Organisers say ALEC, a nonprofit free-market policy group whose membership includes some 2,000 state legislators, wields undue influence by drafting legislation beneficial to its corporate members, which in some cases is then used as a model for legislation in states across America.

Occupy Movement Stages Day of Protests at US Prisons

By Ryan Devereaux, Guardian UK

21 February 12

Occupy demonstrators participated in a nationwide day of action to protest against the US prison system on Monday, with demonstrations carried out at over a dozen sites across the country, including prisons in California, Chicago, Denver and New York.

The call to protest was issued by activists with the Occupy Oakland movement and was co-ordinated to coincide with waves of prison hunger strikes that began at California's Pelican Bay prison in July. Demonstrators denounced the use of restrictive isolation units as infringement upon fundamental human rights. The hunger strikes followed a US supreme court ruling in May which stated that overcrowding in the California prison system had led to "needless suffering and death." The court ordered the state to reduce its overall prison population from 140,000 to 110,000, which still well-exceeds the state's maximum prison capacity.v

Economic Elite Vs. The People: #99% Movement Call to Action Two Year Anniversary Book Release

By David DeGraw, AmpedStatus Report

History should record that the birth of the 99% Movement was on September 17, 2011. That was when the movement became a household name known to the masses. However, the 99% Movement was conceived exactly two years ago, with the release of an online report and call to action titled "The Economic Elite Vs. The People of the United States of America." The report was originally released as a six-part series. The first part was published on February 15, 2010 and the last part was published on February 27, 2010.

To celebrate the two year anniversary, we are reissuing the report with a new introduction recapping the history and evolution of the movement, from the experience of researching and writing the original call to action, to building up the movement online and organizing occupations worldwide. At the end of the book, we feature statements from occupiers, organizers and supporters of the 99%.

Occupy's Amazing Volcker Rule Letter

Proof of this comes from the absolutely astonishing 325-page comment letter on the Volcker Rule which has been put together by Occupy the SEC; it's pretty clear, from reading the letter, that the people who wrote it are whip-smart and extremely talented.

Occupy the SEC is the wonky finreg arm of Occupy Wall Street, and its main authors are worth naming and celebrating: Akshat Tewary, Alexis Goldstein, Corley Miller, George Bailey, Caitlin Kline, Elizabeth Friedrich, and Eric Taylor. If you can't read the whole thing, at least read the introductory comments, on pages 3-6, both for their substance and for the panache of their delivery. A taster:

Reilly reported: "During the long, cold night in the Tombs, at some point we asked a female officer if we could have some blankets. 'We have no blankets.' Some mattresses since we were 12 or so people? 'We have no more mattresses.' Some change in exchange for dollar bills so we could call parents and loved ones? (The one public telephone in the cell would only take coins.) 'It's against regulations.' Some soap? 'Maybe we'll come up with some soap.' After no, no, no to every reasonable request, we wound up with a small jar of soap. Distressing is hardly the word for a culture of willful neglect and the exercise of what power those officers held over us for those 30 hours."

Ex-President Carter Says Occupy Movement Successful in Putting Wealth Disparity on Agenda

By Associated Press

15 February

ATLANTA - Former President Jimmy Carter said on Wednesday that Occupy organizers have created a "relatively successful" movement because they focused national discussion on wealth disparity despite lacking leadership and a unifying set of goals.

The Georgia Democrat said at an event in Atlanta that Occupy organizers have succeeded in forcing the media and Congress to realize the "chasm is getting greater than leaps and bounds" between the rich and the poor.

"It's been relatively successful even acknowledging there's no leadership, there's no coherence and there's no single list of issues they want to succeed," the former president said of the movement started late last year in lower Manhattan to decry corporate influence in government and wealth inequality.

"That issue was basically ignored by the Congress and the news media a year ago," he said. "I believe they've achieved putting that back on the agenda."
